at the radar, it is raining really hard. they are getting wind driven heavy rains from virginia beach down to nags head. those areas of yellow and orange, the center of circulation of earl is just about 40 or 50 miles to the east of hatteras. but the heavy rains are coming in inland and slamming the beach area there. our local radar not showing rain here but there are a few sprinkles in the northern neck of virginia and bay. some of the rain will be arriving into ocean city in the next hour. and earl, here's the wide view continues to advance to the north. it's a category 2 storm. the winds have decreased since yesterday morning at this time but still a powerful storm moving north-northeast at 16. it will take it up towards new england. closer view of the track showing it will be further out to sea. there's still going to be enough tropical storm force winds, maybe 40 to 50-mile-per-hour gusts at ocean city later today. we'll have temperatures climbing in the mid to upper 90s. and breezy tomorrow near 80. looks like a great labor day weekend. how's the traffic? >> we're starting you off wi

're going to show a live picture of virginia beach. the storm is just offshore there. sam champion is there. you see the waves kicking up. it was a little tough ride in north carolina. >> overnight, earl came within 85 miles of cape hatteras, with wind gusts up to 78 miles per hour. that is hurricane force. and it may be a sign of what's to come further north. over the next 24 hours, hurricane earl is expected to give a second punishing blow to eastern massachusetts. that's montauk right there. hurricane warnings are all up for cape cod and martha's vineyard and nantucket. boats being pulled from the water. fema, sending supplies and telling people not to be lulled into any sense of security. >> we have our correspondents in the storm zone, up and down the coast. we lead off with sam champion on virginia beach. hey, sam. >> good morning, george. good morning, elizabeth. this is a category 2 hurricane. there was some weakening overnight. when you talk about hurricane-force winds at 74 miles per hour, 78 miles per hour, you're talking about a nasty storm. look at the skies here. look at the c

and down toward virginia beach as well. but inland in chesapeake, you are not included in this. take a look at these winds. 30 to 50 miles per hour in the southern portions of delmarva, toward the solomons area. maybe 15 to 30 miles per hour. look at d.c. maybe 10 to 20 miles per hour. west of that, not much in the way of winds. a very tight gradient as who sees some wind and had a doesn't see any at all. same deal with the rain. very with the toward the east. for most areas we're staying on the dry side. this evening we will see high clouds continue to increase. it will be a nice evening and a nice night around here. then tomorrow, partly cloudy, mainly dry early. 66 to 74 degrees tomorrow. partly sunny. showers mainly on the eastern shore, turning breezy. 85 to 90 degrees. as we look through the next four days. 79 on saturday. a little on the windy side there. breezy sunday, around 80 degrees. right now the weather looks great saturday, sunday and monday. for most of us in this area, tomorrow you're going to be like what hurricane do they continue to talk about? you really won't see much

tonight. steve harrigan, virginia beach. charmin scedy live in chat that mass morris. first to kill delve hills in north carolina and our jonathan serrie is standing by. what do people there say they are expecting? >> well, shep, i have been using my pocket wind meter clocking winds right now 26 miles per hour. understand the brunt of the storm is still hours away. residents here are hoping that the storm will only sideswipe the outer banks but they anticipate there is a very good chance that the storm will move further inland and that they may be experiencing tropical storm force winds easily but quite possibly hurricane force winds in excess of 74 miles per hour, shep. >> shepard: how confident are officials there in north carolina that everybody is as ready as they are going to be for this thing? >> state officials are very confident that people have taken the proper precautions by and large the tourists who have been urged to evacuate the outer banks have already left and local residents who decided to hunker down, we watched them as they stocked up at local grocery and hardware store

, virginia, plans to open an adult themed store in the old town area has riled some community leaders. they stay store will ruin the wholesome environment they've worked very hard to create there. the store owner says her shop is being unfairly judged. julie carey has more on this. >> reporter: old town Ñimanassa local leaders have spent hundreds of thousands to make it family friendly. that's why some are alarmed to learn, this new store opening soon will feature adult items. the window promises dvds, lotions, lingerie and more. they've called a community meeting. >> it is a big quhern a porno shop wants to locate here. we have them in prince william county and manassas and i've never raised a fuss about it. i've never gone out to shut them down. right here in old town is not the place to do it. >> reporter: the director of the arts center down the block agrees. >> we have the center for the arts. we have a lot of classes in the arts. we have thousands of children that come through every year. and their parents, and i think it is absolutely the wrong place to have a shop like this.

, thank you, doug. >>> in virginia, hurricane earl brought rain and winds as it passed along the coastline this morning. down in virginia beach, there was some rough seas, some light rain. overall it fathers commonwealth dodged any major damage with what was by then a category 2 storm. by mid morning, officials say there were reports of a small number of power outages and some minor flooding. early this morning, earl's winds and rain hit the outer banks in north carolina. a number of major roadways were flooded. about 5,000 people lost power there. schools were closed in six counties. about 400 people went to shelters during the peak of the storm. the officials say nobody was injured. at least no injuries were reported. and while the damage was less than expected, there will be some clean-up after the water recedes. >> more than half a dozen major airlines say they will wave change fees for customers flying into the pafth hurricane earl. that includes continental, delta, jet blue, southwest, united, u.s. airways and air tran. they have a policy for waving fees for hurricane-related fees. m

discontinued south of here. hurricane warnings still to the north carolina-virginia border. we've got tropical storm watches and warnings. and then for new england, we have hurricane warnings, because there is a very good possibility that earl could strike nantucket, jutting out there into the atlantic. again, the storm surge is about 2 to 3 feet, maybe 4 in some sections. five really in unusual areas. and again, this system is very tightly packed. it is raining but there's dry air to the north and so it's having a little trouble getting the northern fringes of the storm up into the new york area right now. rainfall amounts generally about 3 to four inches, some areas may pick up 5 to 6 inches and as you can see offshore of new england the rainfall amounts go over the rain bucket more than ten inches of rain. so a very potent storm still. still a dangerous storm, but as you said it could have been a lot worse. back to you. >> thank you, al. we'll check back in a couple of minutes. let's go down the coast about 50 miles. jim cantore is in cape hatteras. jim, how's it looking there? >> reporter:
